10 Tips for Including Movement into Your Busy Schedule
Mar 15, 2026
I have been fortunate to be both an entrepreneur, completely in control of my schedule, and work for an organization, where my time is dictated by a company’s expectations. Life can get busy and finding time to get out and move can feel like an impossible task. Between work, family, and other commitments, movement often gets pushed to the bottom of the priority list. However, with a little determination, planning and creativity, it's possible to still be a good steward of your body and incorporate fitness into even the busiest of schedules. Here are 10 tips to help you include movement into your daily routine:
- Schedule It
Treat moving your body like any other important appointment and block out time for it in your calendar. You are your most important priority. Whether it's early morning, during lunch breaks, or in the evening, choose specific days and times that work best for you and stick to them.
- Short Workouts
News flash! You don't need hours at the gym to see results. Break your workouts into shorter, more manageable sessions. Even 15-30 minutes of exercise can be effective if done consistently.
- Multitask
Look for opportunities to incorporate exercise into other activities. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, do squats or lunges while brushing your teeth, or go for a walk during phone calls. Pray and walk or pray and ride.
- Move Efficiently
Opt for activities that provide maximum results in minimal time. Try a high-intensity interval training (HIIT), circuit training, or Tabata workouts. These types of exercises can be done in a short amount of time and still offer significant benefits. Go at your own pace!
- Prioritize Movement
Recognize the importance of physical movement for your physical and mental well-being, and make it a priority. Consider the long-term benefits of staying active, such as increased energy, improved mood, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Movement does not need to be performed as a regimented workout, turn the radio on and dance, invest $10 in a jump rope, walk the mall at lunchtime.
- Plan Ahead
Prepare for physical activity in advance by packing gym clothes, sneakers, and any necessary equipment the night before. Having everything ready to go will make it easier to fit in a workout, even on busy days.
- Be Flexible
Be willing to adapt your workout plans based on your schedule. If you can't make it to the gym, try an at-home workout or go for a walk/run outdoors. The key is to stay flexible and find alternative ways to stay active. Plan for bad weather. Find something you enjoy doing when the weather is too cold or too hot.
8. Include Family and Friends
Involve your loved ones in your fitness routine by scheduling active outings together, such as hiking, biking, or playing sports. Not only will you get to spend quality time with them, but you'll also stay active in the process. I think you may be surprised at how easy it is to recruit friends and family.
- Set Realistic Goals
Be realistic about what you can achieve given your schedule and commitments. Set achievable goals that align with your lifestyle and work towards them gradually.Remember you are not competing against anyone.
- Stay Consistent
Consistency is key when it comes to seeing results. Even on days when you're busy or not feeling motivated, try to do something active, even if it's just a short walk or stretching session.
Every little bit of physical activity counts, so don't be too hard on yourself if you miss a workout here and there. The most important thing is to find ways to keep moving and make exercise a sustainable part of your lifestyle.
