How Can I Make Better Food Choices? The Importance of Meal Planning
Mar 15, 2026
In our journey of faith, we are called to steward every area of our lives for the glory of God. This includes our physical health, which is often overlooked in discussions of spiritual well-being. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to honor God with our bodies, recognizing them as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Meal planning transcends practicality; it's a spiritual discipline rooted in biblical principles of stewardship, gratitude, and hospitality. Whether your household is prosperous or struggling, the meals you provide shape your family's experiences, behaviors and values.
My parents' separation when I was five years old altered my stability and relationship with food. As a latch-key kid, I grew up on cold cereal and TV dinners, shaped by my environment and limited by circumstance. While not the worst experience, it influenced my choices and perspectives.
Through athletics and a deeper spiritual understanding, I discovered how whole foods nourish the body as a gift from God. As a parent, equipped with education and a changed perspective, I made a deliberate choice to ensure my children received two nutritious meals daily—breakfast and dinner. My goal was for my children, extended family, friends, and anyone entering my home to develop a healthier and more joyful relationship with food than I had experienced myself.
Health and Wellness
Our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made by God (Psalm 139:14), and it is our responsibility to care for them. Meal planning enables us to prioritize our health and well-being by making intentional choices about the foods we eat. By incorporating nutritious, wholesome ingredients into our meal plans, we can nourish our bodies and honor God with our food choices. Your “planning” and preparing is how you put work to your faith.
Stewardship of Resources
“It is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy." - 1 Corinthians 4:2 (ESV). God has entrusted us with various resources, including our finances and the food we eat. Meal planning allows us to be good stewards of these resources by wisely managing our food budget, reducing waste, and making intentional choices about the foods we consume. When we plan meals ahead of time, we can avoid unnecessary spending and make healthier, budget-friendly choices.
Creating an Atmosphere of Warmth and Generosity
Healthy meal planning not only nourishes our bodies but also feeds our spirits, fostering an environment of warmth and generosity within our families. When we prioritize serving healthy meals made with love and care, we create a space where our loved ones feel valued, cherished, and deeply cared for.
Fostering Meaningful Connections
Planning meals in advance allows us to prepare for gatherings with greater ease and intentionality. Every Thanksgiving we have someone who is single, or home alone for the holidays come and join us. And of course, it doesn’t have to be a holiday, whether it's a simple weeknight dinner, Super Bowl Sunday, or Grandpa’s 90th Birthday, having an intentional plan enables us to extend hospitality more readily and create an atmosphere of warmth and generosity.
Gratitude and Thankfulness
We are encouraged to give thanks in all circumstances, recognizing that every good gift comes from God (James 1:17). Meal planning cultivates a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness for God's provision in our daily lives. By intentionally planning and preparing meals, we can give thanks for the abundance of food that sustains us, recognizing it as a gift from our Heavenly Father.
Serving healthy meals not only nourishes our bodies but also uplifts our spirits and souls. By embracing the practice of healthy meal planning at home, we cultivate sacred spaces where love thrives, relationships flourish, and we feel God's presence tangibly. Let’s steward our choices well and make a meaningful impact with every decision we make.
