Serving with Self-Care: Prioritizing Health While Serving Others

Mar 15, 2026

Serving others is at the core of the Christian faith. From feeding the hungry to comforting the afflicted, our faith calls us to extend love and compassion to those in need. However, in our eagerness to fulfill this calling, we may unintentionally neglect our own well-being.

Signs You're Putting Service Over Health

  1. Ignoring Physical Signs Believing Sickness and Disease Will Never Happen to You: Are you ignoring persistent fatigue, stress, or physical symptoms in your zeal to serve others? Pay attention to your body's signals, as they may be warning signs that you're neglecting your own health.
  2. Neglecting Self-Care: Do you find yourself consistently putting the needs of others before your own, neglecting self-care practices such as proper nutrition, exercise, and rest? Remember, caring for yourself is not selfish—it's essential for sustaining your ability to serve others effectively.
  3. Feeling Overwhelmed: Are you constantly overwhelmed by your commitments and responsibilities, struggling to find balance in your life? Feeling overwhelmed may indicate that you're taking on too much and need to reassess your priorities.
  4. Experiencing Burnout: Have you experienced burnout or emotional exhaustion from continually giving without replenishing your own reserves? Burnout can have serious consequences for your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, making it essential to practice self-care and set healthy boundaries.
  5. Feelings of Guilt When It’s Time to Step Back: Do you experience deep feelings of guilt when considering stepping away from a commitment for a season? It's important to remember that God created the Sabbath and the principle of rest. Guilt or shame should never be a factor when it comes to taking time to replenish and restore your mind, body, and spirit.

Finding Balance and Renewal

  1. Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for activities that nourish your body, mind, and spirit, whether it's taking a walk in nature, spending time in prayer and meditation, or enjoying hobbies that bring you joy. You may need to schedule this time in your calendar just like all of your other important commitments.
  2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary and establish healthy boundaries to protect your time and energy. Remember, saying no to some things allows you to say yes to  important people and moments in your life.
  3. Seek Support: Don't be afraid to reach out for support from friends and family when you're feeling overwhelmed or in need of encouragement. We're meant to journey together as a community of faith.
  4. Build a Team: Come to terms with the fact that someone else is capable of doing what you do. Always make room for others to step in and step up to the opportunity to serve in the same capacity as yourself. Everybody needs back-up.
  5. Embrace Grace: Finally, remember to extend grace to yourself. None of us are perfect, and it's okay to make mistakes or take time to rest and recharge. God's love for us is not based on our performance but on His unending grace and mercy.

Your Well-Being Matters

Our desire to serve others is a beautiful expression of love and faith. However, it's essential to prioritize our own health and well-being so that we can continue to serve others effectively. By recognizing the signs of stress and fatigue and taking proactive steps to find balance, we can honor God with our whole selves—body, mind, and spirit.
